چکیده

Contextual student modeling, also called cultural profiling or cultural modeling, refers to the process of building a computational representation of the cultural identity and background of a student. Previous works have been done that identify and use certain environmental dimensions for such a model. In this paper, a new approach is proposed that uses additional dimensions, and incorporates combinations of dimension clusters to represent and quantify a student’s expression of socio-cultural group traits and preferences. The viability of this approach is demonstrated through the use of a prototype that collects dimension data and generates estimates of a student’s association with particular socio-cultural groups in five categories. An evaluation of the prototype revealed that estimates were rated as reasonable and acceptable by students and confirms that the approach extends current efforts in the field of culturallyaware tutoring systems for modeling student’s cultural context.

A Contextualised General Systems Theory

A system is something that can be separated from its surrounds, but this definition leaves much scope for refinement. Starting with the notion of measurement, we explore increasingly contextual system behaviour and identify three major forms of contextuality that might be exhibited by a system: (1) between components; (2) between system and experimental method; and (3) between a system and its ...

For centuries humans have been looking for the key element that transformed non-human into human minds. Divine intervention, language, and more recently enculturation have been some of the candidates proposed for enacting such a change. Ten years ago I could have subscribed one of the thesis of this paper: “Enculturated great apes might transform the typically astute primate behavior-reading in...

'Do It Yourself' Student Models for Collaborative Student Modelling and Peer Interaction

An approach to student modelling is presented where learners build their own student models. A more accurate model may thereby be obtained, and learners may reflect on their beliefs while constructing their model. The diyM system is illustrated in four environments: two collaborative student modelling systems, and two learner modelling systems with peer interaction as their focus.

What’s Special about Human Imitation? A Comparison with Enculturated Apes

What, if anything, is special about human imitation? An evaluation of enculturated apes' imitation skills, a "best case scenario" of non-human apes' imitation performance, reveals important similarities and differences between this special population of apes and human children. Candidates for shared imitation mechanisms include the ability to imitate various familiar transitive responses and ob...

Modelling bryophytes distribution pattern using environmental parameters of Iran in Geographical Information Systems (GIS): a case study of three genera Tortula, Grimmia and Bryum (Bryophyta)

In the present study, a modelling approach based on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) analysis is presented with the aim of identifying the influence of environmental parameters on three genera, namely, Tortula, Grimmia and Bryum as representatives of Iranian bryoflora. By using ArcGIS Desktop, we produced a model for environmental variables include altitude, precipitation, temperature and...
